Psychiatric Nursing and Electroconvulsive TherapyInstitute of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Sussex, Ashdown House, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9RT, UK Sufficient doubt surrounds electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to warrant nurses opting out of its administration and/or advising patients that it may be only one of a range of treatments open to them. In the latter respect, this discussion touches on aspects of the concept of advocacy. Relationships with the medical profession are also considered, as is the indefatigable attention given to issues of 'professional status' by nurses; this preoccupation facilitates an avoidance of therapeutic/advocacy issues.
